When my grandmother saw me cooking potatoes in water to make mashed potatoes, she burst out laughing and said to me:
“In water? All the flavor goes away, my dear!”
That’s when she revealed the trick that’s been passed down through generations in our family. A simple yet transformative method that turns ordinary mashed potatoes into an irresistible treat.
The trick is in the cooking: boil the potatoes in milk
Yes, it’s that simple. Instead of using water, boil the potatoes directly in milk along with a couple of cloves of garlic and salt. The milk soaks into the potatoes from the inside, resulting in a much creamier texture and a rich flavor that needs almost no additions.
Grandma’s Mashed Potato Recipe
Ingredients:
4 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
2 1/2 cups of whole milk
2 cloves of garlic
Salt to taste
2 tablespoons of butter
Black pepper and nutmeg to taste (optional)
Preparation:
²Preparation:
Place the potatoes in a pot along with the milk, garlic cloves and salt to taste.
Cook over medium heat until the potatoes are completely soft, approximately 20 to 25 minutes.
If you don’t want the garlic flavor to be too strong, remove it before mashing the potatoes.
Add the butter and mash everything with a potato masher or a fork until you achieve the desired texture.
If you prefer a smoother puree, you can add a little more warm milk.
Adjust the flavor with black pepper and nutmeg if desired.
Serve it hot and enjoy it with your favorite side.
This purée isn’t just a recipe; it’s a testament to the love of home cooking that leaves a lasting impression.
