Deep Hamburger, Sausage & Pepperoni Pie
Servings: 8 | Prep Time: 20 minutes | Cook Time: 1 hour | Total Time: 1 hr 20 min
Ingredients
- 1 (9–10") deep-dish pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 lb ground beef
- 8 oz Italian sausage, casings removed
- 6 oz sliced pepperoni
- 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (14 oz) can diced tomatoes, drained
- ½ cup pizza sauce
- 1 Tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried basil
- ½ tsp salt (adjust to taste)
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 large egg + 1 Tbsp water (egg wash)
Equipment
- 10" deep-dish pie pan
- Large skillet
- Mixing spoon
- Small bowl (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375 °F (190 °C). Place the pie crust in a deep-dish pan and flute or crimp the edges. Chill while you prepare the filling.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, crumble and brown the ground beef and Italian sausage until no pink remains (about 6–8 min). Drain excess fat.
- Add chopped onion and bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté 4–5 min, until vegetables soften. Stir in minced garlic and cook 30 sec more.
- Stir in diced tomatoes, pizza sauce, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Reduce heat to low and simmer 5–7 min, until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and let cool 5 min.
- Layer half of the meat sauce evenly in the pie crust.
- Sprinkle with 1 cup mozzarella and ½ cup cheddar.
- Arrange half of the pepperoni slices over the cheese.
- Repeat: spoon the remaining sauce, then the remaining cheeses, and top with remaining pepperoni.
- In a small bowl, whisk together egg and water. Brush the pie crust edge (and top crust if using) with egg wash.
- Bake on the center rack 45–55 min, until crust is golden and filling bubbles around the edges. If crust browns too quickly, cover lightly with foil after 30 min.
- Let the pie rest 10 min before slicing. Serve warm.
Serving Suggestions
- Garnish with fresh basil or parsley.
- Serve with extra marinara sauce or a simple green salad.
Tips & Variations
- Substitute ground turkey for beef for a lighter option.
- Add sliced mushrooms or olives in layer with the pepperoni.
- Use a lattice-style top crust for a classic pie look.
