Description

Deep Hamburger, Sausage & Pepperoni Pie

Servings: 8 | Prep Time: 20 minutes | Cook Time: 1 hour | Total Time: 1 hr 20 min

Ingredients

  • 1 (9–10") deep-dish pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 8 oz Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 6 oz sliced pepperoni
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (14 oz) can diced tomatoes, drained
  • ½ cup pizza sauce
  • 1 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • ½ tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 large egg + 1 Tbsp water (egg wash)

Equipment

  • 10" deep-dish pie pan
  • Large skillet
  • Mixing spoon
  • Small bowl (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 °F (190 °C). Place the pie crust in a deep-dish pan and flute or crimp the edges. Chill while you prepare the filling.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, crumble and brown the ground beef and Italian sausage until no pink remains (about 6–8 min). Drain excess fat.
  3. Add chopped onion and bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté 4–5 min, until vegetables soften. Stir in minced garlic and cook 30 sec more.
  4. Stir in diced tomatoes, pizza sauce, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Reduce heat to low and simmer 5–7 min, until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and let cool 5 min.
  5. Layer half of the meat sauce evenly in the pie crust.
  6. Sprinkle with 1 cup mozzarella and ½ cup cheddar.
  7. Arrange half of the pepperoni slices over the cheese.
  8. Repeat: spoon the remaining sauce, then the remaining cheeses, and top with remaining pepperoni.
  9. In a small bowl, whisk together egg and water. Brush the pie crust edge (and top crust if using) with egg wash.
  10. Bake on the center rack 45–55 min, until crust is golden and filling bubbles around the edges. If crust browns too quickly, cover lightly with foil after 30 min.
  11. Let the pie rest 10 min before slicing. Serve warm.

Serving Suggestions

  • Garnish with fresh basil or parsley.
  • Serve with extra marinara sauce or a simple green salad.

Tips & Variations

  • Substitute ground turkey for beef for a lighter option.
  • Add sliced mushrooms or olives in layer with the pepperoni.
  • Use a lattice-style top crust for a classic pie look.
