New research shows that the average American has sex only once a week, and experts say that too few moments of intimacy can negatively impact quality of life.

Many people underestimate the importance of emotional and physical connection between people. The truth is that a prolonged lack of closeness can affect not only physical but also mental health.

According to studies, people who live without intimate relationships for a long time are more likely to experience anxiety, low mood, and emotional instability.

Scottish scientists found that people without regular intimacy have a harder time dealing with stressful situations, such as public appearances, compared to those who maintain a more active relationship.

Mental health specialist Dr. Sham Singh explains that suppressing natural urges without alternative ways to relieve them can lead to tension, irritability, and internal discomfort.

Additionally, moderate intimacy is also linked to better immune defenses. A study from the University of Pennsylvania found that people with more active personal lives had higher levels of antibodies that help protect the body.

Long periods without intimacy

During the pandemic, the link between mental health and personal relationships became even clearer. People who maintained closer relationships reported lower levels of anxiety.

This is associated with the release of endorphins — hormones that promote relaxation and good sleep.

However, the prolonged lack of intimacy can also manifest itself physically - through tension, concentration problems, disturbed sleep, and fatigue due to hormonal changes.

Change in young people's attitudes

Diminished interest in intimate relationships is no longer just a problem for older generations. It is increasingly being seen among young people, especially millennials and Generation Z.

Data shows that the number of young adults without partner experience is growing, and more people are living alone and postponing starting a family.
